Are you going on tour to Kiev, and do not know which interesting attraction to look over apart from those listed in all tourist guides? Is it possible to see the whole country without having to leave Kiev? And even walk around it within one day? You can surely do all these, if visit Pirogovo open-air museum, situated on the outskirts of Kiev.
It is absolute tourist must see of Kiev this season. Besides, walking there will bring you back in time for a couple of centuries. The theme park could easily become a decoration to any fairy tale, or serve an illustration of time machine.
The outdoor Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine is a hilly area of 150 hectares, where over 300 museum items have been collected throughout the country. All the exhibits are original and dated sixteenth century through early XX century. Here, you can find typical Ukrainian houses of the poorest peasants, of middle class and of rich peasants of the past times (all of them are original and survived till nowadays). Besides, there are old mills, churches, a building of the village council, two hundred years old school and old Ukrainian tavern. Interiors of the old buildings have been fully preserved as well as fully preserved is old mode of Ukrainian life. The exposition includes collections of folk clothing, household items, glassware, craft accessories, musical instruments and many more items, widely used in this part of the world in time of active colonization of the Americas. In total, the museum stores and exhibits over 70,000 objects. Interestingly, the original symbol of the museum is a chain of old windmills standing on a hill.
One of the oldest exhibit found here is a house of the late XVI century, which is considered the most ancient monument of folk architecture in the former USSR.
Walking along the paths of the open-air museum, it is easy to imagine how the Ukrainians lived several hundred years ago. Actually the museum looks very much alike ancient Ukrainian village, here everyone can still hear folk music and songs. Visiting the place can easily become a fun outing. Here tourists are invited to ride on horseback, buy souvenirs, eat in restaurants. In addition, if visitors wish, they can learn basics of some crafts.
For walks one can choose either separate region of Ukraine such as Transcarpathia, Southern Ukraine, regions of Central or Eastern Ukraine, or see the entire country at once (of course, if he or she is strong enough for such a walk).
Throughout the year, there are various celebrations and rites held in Pirogovo. Each season there are no less then twenty festivals organized in the territory of the museum, and some of them are religious (both Christian and pagan). There are five Orthodox churches there, where services are held regularly. There is a possibility to order both wedding ceremony and christening. For lovers there is the opportunity to get married in one of the oldest existing wooden churches dated 17th century.
