As dim light of chandeliers flood the room and live music fills the air, Malanka revelers enjoy a night of dining and dancing. On the eve of January 13th in accordance to Julian calendar, Ukrainians take part in the Feast of Melania the Younger. The event—commonly known as Malanka—marks the end of the Christmas holidays and the beginning of festivities prior to Lent. Families gather and old friends reunite to bid farewell to the passing year and welcome a new one.
Traditionally during Malanka, carolers visit homes playing pranks or performing skits with a bachelor dressed as a female à la Андрі́й Дани́лко as Вєрка Сердючка. As opposed to tradition, a modern day approach to men’s attire on Malanka’s eve is a suit or a tuxedo. Although men may be handsome, the eyes are always on the ladies. What dress is she wearing, how does her hair look, and oh- my-goodness is she wearing pants?
As women, we know that it is no easy task to get dressed for Malanka. Aside from deciding which event to attend—will it be Cym, Plast, Elite or this year’s new Royal Malanka—we must decide whether or not to buy a new dress. And if yes, then what best to wear?
And for more of a challenge, regardless how fabulous is your outfit, you cannot wear the same thing twice. But there is good news: you do not have to purchase an entirely new outfit. As we know pretty cocktail dresses do not come cheap, so with a touch of creativity one can play around with what we already own and still be the belle of the ball. Here are some ideas to get your imagination flowing:
Belle Mystique in a Pantsuit
This season, nothing is hotter than a pantsuit. For a festive touch, add a sequin top or a sparkly pair of heels. Your new look will exude confidence, as in a sea of dresses you will be a belle mystique . And better yet, a pantsuit is a smart investment as pants and blazer can be worn separately, adding more looks to your wardrobe.
Belle Demure in Skirt and Blouse
A skirt and blouse combination is a versatile option. No, I am not speaking of office chic, rather of a belle demure . A beautiful pencil skirt and a delicate blouse can be much more appealing than an over to the top dress. Plus, your ability to wear such a feminine silhouette without being over the top demonstrates confidence and
Belle Classique in a LBD
Nothing says cheeky like a little black dress. With a hint of naughty and a touch of class, this staple can be confidently worn over and again. A little black dress is easy to accessorize and can suit well a variety of occasions. For instance, you can wear the same little black dress to two Malanka’s with few ever the wiser – so long as you accessorize with a lively jacket or a bold pair of shoes.
When getting ready for your evening of festivities, please remember Melanka is all about celebrating our Ukrainian culture with friends and family. Enjoy yourself, even while getting ready for your big night out. Pour yourself a glass of wine, put on some music, hop into a luscious bubble bath and start your new year properly: by spoiling yourself. After all, tonight you are the belle of the ball!
