This event has a special meaning to our Ukrainian community in Toronto for number of good reasons.
It represents the pride in wearing our traditional Ukrainian “vyshyvanki”, as well as the good “Old-fashion” Zabava.
The history of this event goes back over a hundred years and comes from the country side of Ukraine where villages would gather for what was then called a “Vechornici”. It was one of the most fun and exciting events, where young adults would gather to find their future companions and dance to their favorite music. Furthermore, to make a proper presentation of the “true Ukrainian” colors, they would put on their best “vyhyvanka” to reflect their pride. The uniqueness of each “sorochka” would often tell a story of their origins or travels. It’s not only makes for a beautiful outfit, but also a great conversation starter.
This year, the event will be co-hosted by the Ukraina Dance Ensemble, who will be raising funds through tickets sales for their dance tour in Ukraine this summer, as well as Vesnianka Dance Ensemble, who have having their 55th anniversary gala. Therefore we’re expecting to see our midnight “kolomyjka” this year to last extra longer.
The success of this event have could be seen on our website through many pictures and vidoes, as it has been a sold out zabava every year since 2010.
